A. Identify and Explain ONE cause of the Scramble for Africa.

A major cause of the Scramble for Africa might be European countries’ desire for Africa’s abundant resources. During the Berlin Conference from 1884 to 1885, European powers discussed resources and land allocation between them. This conference generally caused the Scramble for Africa, as they actually got involved into Africa countries later.

B. Identify and Explain ONE impact of the Scramble for Africa.

One of the major impacts of the Scramble for Africa is that African cultural groups are destroyed through the land-conquering border separation. During the British colonization era, in South Africa, during the Boer War, the British military fight agains local power for many years. Those kinds of military conflicts largely destroyed local ethnic groups by physically weakening their power.

C. Identify and Explain ONE Difference between the Scramble for Africa and earlier examples of European Imperialism.

One significant difference between the Scramble for Africa and earlier European Imperialism is that earlier colonization was usually informal-controlled-based with negotiation with local elites; in contrast, the colonization in Africa is mainly village-by-village cover, which is harder and more time-consuming. This was because local African groups are fragmented without centralized control, so that the ways to negotiate and take over the state do not work as intended in Africa.
