Recommendation Letter for Alan

To Whom It May Concern,

I am delighted to write this letter in support of Alan’s application to your summer program. My name is Yining Wu, and I am a mathematics teacher at Living Word Shanghai. I have had the pleasure of teaching Alan in AP Statistics since his 11th grade, and I can say without hesitation that he is one of the most remarkable students I have had the opportunity to work with.

Alan is an exceptionally diligent and enthusiastic student. He demonstrates a keen interest in learning and is always eager to engage in class discussions. His active participation has consistently impressed me, and he often goes beyond the requirements of the curriculum to explore deeper mathematical concepts. For instance, while our AP Statistics course does not cover Bayes’ Theorem, Alan took the initiative to study this topic independently and applied it in class exercises. I rarely see such a high level of curiosity and self-motivation, and there are many other things like this that truly reflect his passion for learning.

Beyond the classroom, Alan is passionate about applying mathematics to real-world problems. I am currently supervising his research project on using queuing theory to solve the congestion of people in our school cafeteria. Alan builds a model with inputs of influencing factors such as number of service windows, service time to each person, and number of people. His model targets to minimize the average waiting time or the length of line by adjusting the parameters. This project reflects his ability to tackle practical issues with a mathematical mindset.

Alan has demonstrated exceptional leadership in multiple academic competitions by actively participating in different contests. Most notably, in November 2024 he formed a team and took on the role of leader with the school’s top students to compete in High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HIMCM). Apart from this, his organizational skills have been demonstrated in other areas as well. He had led several teams participated in international economics competitions including the National Economics Challenge (NEC) and International Economics Olympiad (IEO). These competitions often require students to conduct case studies, and leadership skills are particularly important in these tasks.

Alan is a diligent, independent, and innovative student. He is always eager to take on challenges and has a genuine passion for learning. I am confident that he will excel in your summer program and contribute positively to the experience.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any further information.

Sincerely,
Yining Wu
