Our school is not a top-tier-school in our city and has a high turnover rate of teachers. A lot of teachers leave after a year or even less than one year of being joined this school.
The teacher who taught me AP Calculus BC last year was a very kind and skilled person, but he left this school year. He brought a lot of math knowledge to me and was also my math competition starter. He has started a group for those who would like to participate in math competitions or have a great desire learning math (the group is independent from math club) since I have just joined this school (basically no one at my school chooses to major in math later in life, I’m one of the only ones) He usually talks about math competitions content like combinations, probability, number theory, etc. two or three times a week after school. He was incredibly supportive of me. Also I got involved in the math club (he is also the advisor of math club. In the math club he taught the competition content as well) and I gained a lot.
Since he left, the math atmosphere in our school is not as strong and I can only learn math competition staff by myself.
I think that since we have a high turnover of teachers at school, I am going to start a large annual math event at this school in grade 12 (our school allows students to start this kind of large annual event and it will be hold continually by Student Council even if they have graduated. This is how our school’s annual film festival was founded). I envisioned something like an all-day event with some booths in the playground with a variety of math games and also a group math contest with problems proposed from the math club. Hopefully I can gather some math geniuses independent from the math club and create a good math atmosphere together.
I have not encountered very serious situations like this, but I do have a few little problems with it.
When I was in grade 9 our school only offered IGCSE math, however by the time I was in grade 8 (I was in a Chinese local school in grade 8) I had almost finished all the algebra and geometry content equivalent to the IGCSE math content. So I re-learned Elementary Algebra again for a year except for the Basic Calculus part.
In my 11th grade (this year), for 11th graders our school only offers AP Calculus AB/BC and AP Statistics. However, I almost had no interest in statistics and was forced to take a year of statistics instead of learning pure math.
