First thing first, the foundation for an inclusive and anti-racist environment is treating all people equally. Creating an understanding of diversity presupposes that most people within the group are able to treat all people equally. They will not exclude or alienate any of their classmates for any reason. Understanding this is not complicated, but actually applying it can involve some complexities.
In everyday learning and collaboration, I will actively listen to voices from different cultural backgrounds and respect each person’s unique experiences and perspectives. When working in teams, I will strive to ensure that all members are able to express their opinions fairly, avoiding bias or exclusion due to identity, background or cultural differences.
Of course, in addition to everyday interactions, when populations are used as research subjects, there is a need to include people of as many races as possible as a way to promote equity and diversity. For example, in my research in artificial intelligence and music, I will focus on the issue of possible bias within races, and do my best to minimize data injustice by improving data collection methods or optimizing model training progress.
In addition, I would like to actively participate in relevant discussions and initiatives. I will actively join organizations or seminars, workshops, etc. on inclusion and diversity, and explore with others how to build a fairer and more open environment in the field of science and technology. I believe I can do all of the above if I am in a diverse environment.
In conclusion, I believe that inclusion and anti-racism are not only the embodiment of social values, but also crucial to the development of science and technology. Only in an open and fair environment can we truly realize the potential of AI or computer science, and make technology beneficial to all.
